Arne Slot was - rather unsurprisingly - grilled over transfers during his first Premier League press conference as Liverpool manager.

The Dutchman's managerial career in English football will begin on Saturday when he and the Reds travel to face newly promoted Ipswich Town.

But the main talking point around Anfield at the moment is the fact that the new head coach’s squad has yet to be bolstered following a failed move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Slot spoke honestly about that disappointment, Luis Diaz’s future, and the contract situations of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

What happened with Martin Zubimendi?

I said many times already that I think our squad is really strong and it's not so easy to find players that can help us or strengthen the squad. Zubimendi was one of them, to be fair, but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have and those ones have done really well in pre-season so we are in a good place. And like I said many times before, in the background Richard [Hughes] is trying to strengthen the squad as he can but, unfortunately, Zubimendi decided not to come. [Richard] tried every effort to bring him in but if a player doesn't want to come, it's obvious that he is not coming.
