It perhaps speaks to Alexis Mac Allister’s importance to Liverpool that his form has closely tracked that of the team as a whole throughout this difficult season.

Poor at the start, even worse in the middle, but now starting to show signs of a return to form - this description could be applied to either the individual or the collective when it comes to this campaign.

For Mac Allister, any personal struggles can be traced back to a severely disrupted pre-season, which saw him return to training only in late July.

It is understood that was down to a number of niggling issues, rather than one serious injury, but they had been significant enough to rule him out of the final games of the preceding campaign.

And such a lengthy lay-off left the Argentine playing catch-up this time around, coping with a physical deficit that seemed to seriously hamper his defensive work.

As much was evident in the numbers, with Mac Allister’s tackles won per 90 having dropped from 3.28 to 1.61, possession won in the final third halving from 0.62 to 0.31, and duels won going from 5.87 to 3.63 compared to the previous season.
